WHAT IS ASBESTOS? Asbestos is a fibrous silicate mineral. It occurs naturally in the earth’s crust and is present in two-thirds of the rocks. There are many types of Asbestos fibres. Asbestos fibres are grouped into two groups serpentine and amphibole groups. Each group is distinctively different from the other in physical and chemical characteristics. |

What does the World Health Organisation say? |

The World Health Organisation has, on numerous occasions, stated that ingested asbestos (i.e. asbestos in drinking water) does not cause adverse effects. |

What does the International Labour Organization say? |
|
The International Labour Organisation, United Nations Environment Programme and the World Health Organisation agree that asbestos cement can be safely used under properly controlled conditions. |
